Hello, Students and Friends! With the excitement of the 2018 Winter Olympics coming soon, I wanted to have a fun way to challenge students to strive towards going for the gold in their practice and musical goals. Hence, the Joyful Songs Music Olympics 2018! I've come up with a few ideas for "Music Olympic Games" to be played during lessons over the next eight weeks from January 2 - February 26 where students may earn points upon reaching level goals. Students will be challenged to make a practice goal that they will commit to during the eight weeks (and hopefully beyond). Students will also be given level challenges that they may work on during the week to earn additional points. Please download and print out the chart at the bottom and bring to lessons to keep track of the points you have earned. I. Practice / Point Chart – Athletes set goals and prepare every day for years to reach for the gold! Set a practice goal for yourself and work towards sticking to it for the next 8 weeks. Receive points when you write down your practice time every day; extra if you practice every day during the week. What do you think will happen if you practice diligently every day over the next 2 months? II. Skiing Scales - During your lesson, we will be doing some climbing up and skiing down some scale patterns (with chalk blocks) at your level to earn points. You will be given a goal to work on during the week. The scale goal must be memorized and played steadily to earn its points. See below for scale printouts. III. Rhythm Race – During lessons, we will be learning about rhythm patterns and reviewing note values with cards and games to earn some points. For your practice time, you will be assigned rhythms from your music for you to "clap, tap, and rap" for the next lesson. You must be able to count aloud with the correct timing with your metronome to earn your points. If you do not have a metronome, please see the link below or download a free app for one. IV. Additional Events - Earn more points by choosing and completing extra events! a. Sight Reading Challenge – athletes mentally prepare and warm-up before moving. Sight read a new piece every day! b. Play the Olympic Fanfare or another Olympic Theme Music c. Parade of Nations - Research the music of another country and either play a piece from there or describe something special about it. d. Ice Skating / Composer– Create a “routine” by composing a piece of music influenced by an event. Play it for friends! e. Gymnastics Performance – play a piece by memory for Ms. J and your family! f. Weightlifting Endurance (woodwinds only) – long tones with your tuner; increase your time over 8 weeks. g. Pentathlon of Musical Technique – (each counts as one event) 1. Practice note reading 100 notes. 2. Memorize and play 8 arpeggios / chords. 3. Memorize 2 blues scales and play some improvisation with Ms. J. 4. Plan and play musical phrases in your piece. 5. Describe and play dynamics in your piece. Good luck, musical athletes! You can go for the gold in your musical endeavors by making goals, keeping an excellent work ethic, practice, persistence, diligence, and determination.
